4 reasons Dundee should be your next family holiday destination

If you’re looking for a family holiday destination, Dundee is an often over-looked but perfect choice. From award-winning attractions to the great outdoors, Dundee has something for every type of family and any budget. Here’s why we love it so much

It’s closer than you think

Within two hours of anywhere in Central Scotland and a gateway to the Highlands, it’s convenient and accessible by car, train or bus so easy for a quick weekend getaway or a week-long family trip.

Dundee is known as the ‘sunniest city in Scotland’ and often puts on a memorable sunset display. We recommend walking out to the bridge over the middle of City Quay to watch the sun fall behind the hotel or heading down toward the banks of River Tay next to the rail bridge.

There are free things to do

Whether you’re visiting for a day, weekend or longer there’s lots to do in Dundee. Our guide to free activities will point you in the direction of the impressive galleries, museums and viewpoints that dominate our Instagram feeds when guests explore Dundee.

It’s packed full of attractions

From Camperdown Wildlife Park to RRS Discovery and Dundee Science Centre, we’re spoilt for choice in Dundee for days out with little ones. If your kids are older, Dundee Karting or Battlefield Live, Dundee’s tactical laser tag centre will impress tough teens.

Dundee is the home of DC Thompson, publishers of famous comics Oor Wullie, Beano and Dandy. Comic book fans can visit statues of Minnie the Minx, Desperate Dan and his dog which are all outside The Overgate Shopping Centre. Oor Wullie has also recently been added outside the McManus Galleries.

It’s a gateway to the North

It’s a great hub for exploring the beauty that the East of Scotland has to offer. Drive across the Tay Bridge and you’ll be in St Andrews within half an hour. Visit the famous golf courses, stunning beaches or historic town centre.

If you’d rather venture further afield, head north along the Angus Coastal Route. A drive that won’t disappoint, follow the coast up through Broughty Ferry, Monifeith, Carnoustie, Arbroath, Montrose and Stonehaven.
