Our guide to travelling in London

Once you arrive in London, the city is best explored on foot. You’ll see much more than you would travelling on the London Underground. Each Apex hotel is centrally located in the heart of the City of London and close to most key attractions like St Paul’s, London Eye, Tower of London and Tate Modern. But the city is big so you might need the help of public transport to help you make the most of your precious time in London – so here’s our guide to getting around smoothly.

Transport for London has some great free apps to help you plan trips and access timetables, station information and prices to make your trip convenient and straight-forward.

Maps

An attractions map of the city in London, plus one of the tube network will help make your trip easy. Transport for London has great resources on its website -you can download and print maps here. Familiarise yourself with the tube lines and zones before travelling and you’ll save time. If you’re stuck, our reception teams are pros in local transport and can help you find the best route to your attraction. Once you’ve been in London for a day you’ll get to know your way around key areas.

Oyster card

If you’re planning on using public transport more than once, a Visitor Oyster Card is great. UK residents can buy one for £3 online before your trip, or at an Underground station. An Oyster Card ensures you get the best ticket price for your trip. You ‘tap in’ and ‘tap out’ at each journey and your cheapest journey price will be calculated. You can use it on tubes, buses (remember, London buses are cashless) and water taxis to get up and down the River Thames.

Pre-load your Oyster with money, or top-up at an Underground station – it’s easy. We’d advise about £30 for a 3-4 day trip, you can always top-up again later, your journey prices will depend on the zones you travel through and whether or not you avoid peak times. Read our 48 hours in London guide to make sure you don’t miss out on the best things to do whilst planning your travel.

Kids

A trip to London will be full of ‘firsts’ for kids, so a trip on a big red London bus or Underground tube will be exciting. Children under 11 travel for free on the tube so you won’t have to worry about extra costs. If you stay at any of our Apex Hotels in London city centre, you’ll be close to stations and kids stay and eat free throughout your stay.
