5 places to watch Edinburgh Castle fireworks

Edinburgh Castle fireworks are truly magical. The world-famous displays celebrate events taking place at the Castle throughout the year including The Virgin Money Fireworks Concert which brings the Edinburgh International Festival to an end, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay display at midnight and Summer Castle Concerts.

Here’s our locals guide of where to watch Edinburgh Castle fireworks for free across the city with the best views if you’re looking to avoid the busy Princes Street and Princes Street Gardens areas with entry fees.

Inverleith Park

This is the perfect spot for viewing the fireworks directly above the front of the Castle, the way the bursts are intended to be seen. A little further out than city centre spots, but lots of space and a slope above the pond means you’ll get a space where no one can block your view. We recommend arriving early to get the best spot.

Arthurs’ Seat

A traditional spot and you’ll bag a bucket list success if you’ve never climbed it before. There’s parking, but it will fill up fast so get there early. Once you’re at the car park, there are few path options, but a torch is essential. It’s worth the trip just to see the parade of torch lights going up and down the hill. If you’re not fussed on difficulty just follow the crowd and you’ll be at the top in about 30 minutes with views along the line of the Castle.

Calton Hill

Just a few minutes’ walk from Princes Street, this is one of the hills with a close view. From Apex Waterloo Place you’ll be just a few steps to Calton Hill so after the display you can pop back into Elliot’s for a drink to warm you up.

Blackford Hill

To the South of the city centre and nestled between Morningside and The Braid Hills you’ll get a prime viewing point to the back of the Castle in this large space. Stay down near the Observatory for a quieter crowd and you’ll get personal space to gaze into the night.

Bruntsfield Links

This golf course has a city centre location just next to The Meadows, loads of space and a good view to the back of the Castle. It’s close to The Grassmarket so if you’re staying at Apex Grassmarket or Apex City of Edinburgh you’ll be just a stone’s throw away.
