A city guide to Christmas lights

The season to be jolly is fast approaching once again, and before we know it, crowds will be flocking to colourful Christmas light displays up and down the country to officially usher in the celebrations.

These increasingly popular switch-on events – often punctuated by a feast of fireworks – are now a staple of the Christmas countdown, drawing swooning couples, festive-minded friends, big family audiences, and often big name celebrities to perform the honours.

If you’re trying to decide where to go to really get into the festive spirit, here’s our pick of Christmas light displays taking place this November…

London’s sparkling sea of lights

Unsurprisingly, London has an enviable line-up – and frankly, it’s just not Christmas in the capital until Oxford Street is transformed into a sparkling sea of lights. This year, London’s best-known shopping thoroughfare will be celebrating its 58th world-famous Christmas light show with a staggering 1,778 decorations, including enormous baubles, 750,000 LED lightbulbs and ‘falling snow flakes’, creating what’s sure to be a striking and memorable switch-on.

It’s no coincidence that the event on 7 November is expected to attract more than a million people – and no doubt a famous face or two. Last year’s display was officially inaugurated by pop star Craig David and this year, the honour of switching on the lights has fallen to Rita Ora.

For a relaxing, convenient stay in the city before and after, Apex Temple Court Hotel, Apex London Wall Hotel and Apex City of London Hotel are all within half-an-hour of Oxford Street when travelling by public transport, offering ideal accommodation for festivity-loving groups.

Santa’s exciting arrival

Historic Bath is a wonderful place to be during the run-up to the most wonderful time of the year. The city’s Oldfield Park area will be getting in on the festive action this year, with 25 November officially announced as the date for the switch-on in Moorland Road. It commences at 2pm with Santa’s exciting arrival. The actual lights will be turned on at 4.30pm and over a thousand are expected to join the fun.

You can relax in style afterwards at the four-star Apex City of Bath Hotel – the city’s largest – which offers great leisure facilities, as well as a bar and restaurant that treats diners to classic French cooking with a British twist.

Launch of winter time celebrations

Not to be outdone, Glasgow always puts on a big Christmas light show that’s considered to be the official launch of the city’s winter time celebrations in George Square, and this year’s festive fiesta will land on 19 November at 6pm. Tickets are allocated by ballot, so it’s a first come, first served situation for those who sign up early. However, plenty still enjoy the stunning display from surrounding streets. Arrive in plenty of time to be assured of a good vantage point.

Following the switch-on will be a host of great festive events across subsequent weeks – the Glasgow Santa Dash, Glasgow Style Mile Carnival, Baby’s First Christmas, Glasgow Christmas Markets and more.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay before and after the switch on, you can call Apex City of Glasgow Hotel on Bath Street ho-ho-home for a couple of nights. With luxurious, comfortable accommodation – complete with bi-level Duplex Suites that offer stunning floor-to-ceiling views of the city – it’s perfect for mulling over your Christmas wish list.

Choirs from across the country

Remaining north of the border, Edinburgh’s ‘Light Night’ kicks off at 3pm on 19 November with fireworks lighting up the sky at 5pm. The event will see the capital’s Christmas tree on the Mound illuminated as choirs from across the country perform in front of an expected crowd of 20,000.

Apex City of Edinburgh Hotel, Apex Grassmarket Hotel and Apex Waterloo Place Hotel are all within easy walking distance of Mound, making a great night even better.

Dundee’s illuminated festive extravaganza

Further north, there’s Dundee’s own illuminated festive extravaganza, pencilled in for 24 November at City Square as part of an evening of great family entertainment. Up to 25,000 have attended the switch-on in previous years, so it’s best to start planning right away if you’re looking to be part of the fun.

With that in mind, the four-star Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa is within easy walking distance, and enjoys a great Waterfront location next to the highly-anticipated V&A Museum which is due to open in 2018.
