Introducing the Apex Grasshopper

Here at Apex, we’re always looking for ways to improve your stay with us. That’s why we’re delighted to finally be able to share our exciting new project with you… Edinburgh Castle’s first ever aerial gondola, the Apex Grasshopper!

This innovative structure will allow guests who stay at our Apex Grassmarket Hotel to hop on a state-of-the-art gondola without even leaving the hotel and travel straight to Edinburgh Castle’s Esplanade at the top of the Royal Mile. Guests who stay at our Grassmarket hotel already have unparalleled Castle views but the Apex Grasshopper will take their experience in the capital to new heights – literally!

When given the go-ahead, working closely with the team at ISA Architects, we’ll be putting plans in motion to build eight, four-person gondolas to take guests from the roof of the Apex Grassmarket Hotel to Edinburgh Castle and back, making the 200 meter round journey in just under 10 minutes. Not only will this offer guests incomparable views of Edinburgh’s Old and New Town, but it will allow keen explorers to save valuable sight-seeing time for the rest of the city’s attractions. The sky’s the limit when it comes to going over and above for our guests and we can’t wait to bring this showstopping new transport experience to Edinburgh. We firmly believe it’s going to be an exceptional addition to the city’s already impressive tourism offerings and will change the skyline of Edinburgh’s Grassmarket for the better. A feasibility study is currently underway for the project.

Poppy Cox, Apex Grasshopper project manager, said: “Tourists love the fact Apex’s Grassmarket hotel offers amazing views of the Castle. But many are often time poor, with only a few days to spend exploring, so now they’ll be able to walk out of their rooms, hop into a gondola and be in the Castle grounds in minutes. We pride ourselves in going the extra mile for our guests and this is the perfect example – no other Scottish hotel will boast a link directly from its rooftop to one of the world’s most iconic tourist attractions.”

Ian Springford, Director of ISA Architects, said: “We’re very excited to reveal the first CGIs of the Apex Grasshopper showing the transformation it will make to the Grassmarket’s skyline. If given the go ahead, we’re confident we can deliver this project quicker and cheaper than the tram extension and our ambition is to see the project come to fruition by 1 April 2021.”
