Your London guide for January 2020

We’ve been looking forward to 2020 for a while now. From the UEFA Euros showcasing top-flight football all over Europe for the first time ever, to the Olympic Games in Tokyo, it’s going to be a year to remember. And London’s offering for the year ahead looks better than ever, with a wide range of new attractions and open-air events, including some of the capital’s biggest music, sports and festivals all to come.

With such an exciting year in store, we’ve compiled a list of must-see events and things to do in the capital to ensure your January starts the best way possible.

Join the parade

What better way to welcome in 2020 than to get out on the streets and join in the party atmosphere? Celebrating its 34th year in 2020, London’s New Year’s Day Parade (LNYDP) will feature more than 8,500 performers representing 20 countries, including Pearly Kings and Queens, cheerleaders, marching bands, dancers and representatives from West End shows.

The carnival-like celebrations will be less than a 10-minute walk from our Apex City of London Hotel so you can enjoy the comforts of one of our dreamy beds after joining in all the fun and Instagrammable views.

Light up your life

From 16th-25th January, the business district will be glowing even brighter than usual thanks to the addition of sparkling installations and interactive experiences from international artists.

At 2020’s Winter Lights at Canary Wharf, some favourites will return from previous years alongside some installations never before seen in the UK and some newly commissioned artworks. The exhibition features both pieces which can be admired from afar as well as those which will allow people to get up close and interact with them.

Our Apex London Wall Hotel is just a short tube journey away from Canary Wharf, so you can sink into one of our comfortable beds after taking in the bright city lights.

See a concert

London is of course known for being the city where incredible bands get their start. Many go on to be known around the world and others build a cult following. In January alone, there’s a plethora of musical treats to boost your mood. From Slipknot and Behemoth at the O2 Arena on January 25th to Madonna‘s ‘Madame X Tour’ starting at The London Palladium on the 26th, no matter your taste in music, there’s a concert in the capital for you.

Take in some art

Still a bit tender after all of those celebrations over the festive period and New Year? How about a leisurely stroll around one of the finest galleries in the world. The National Portrait Gallery on Trafalgar Square is home to some extraordinary exhibits and events, and one that stands out to us is the Gauguin Portraits. The highly anticipated exhibition shows how the famous French artist revolutionised the portrait – there’s no denying this man had incredible artistic talents. The first-ever exhibition devoted to the portraits of Paul Gauguin will be on show until 26th January.

Our Apex Temple Court Hotel is a great place to stay if you’re visiting any of central London’s world-famous museums or galleries. Situated just 15 minutes from Trafalgar Square, you’ll be just a short tube ride or walk away, and perfectly placed to take in all the city has to offer.

The Borough is one of London’s finest areas for food and drink

Eat your way around SE1

If you don’t want to stop indulging in delicious food and drink (it’s definitely our favourite part of the festive season), then London is awash with world-famous food markets, and a firm favourite of ours is Borough Market. This popular market in London Bridge has a history that goes back to the 13th century, and as we approach 2020, it’s livelier than ever. Borough Market is packed with artisan traders such as Alsop & Walker, Monmouth Coffee, Brindisa and The East London Liquor Company. It’s also home to some of the best cafes, restaurants and bars in the city. Once you’ve had your fill, our Apex City of London Hotel is just a short stroll over London Bridge so you can rest up in one of our incredibly comfortable rooms.

If you visit any of the London Apex Hotels, make sure you share your stay with us on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.
