Our guide to the best free family days out in the UK

Anyone with little ones knows that family time is precious, and that families need to make the most of that time spent together.

When it comes to quality family time, all we really want is a day out with the children which offers something to keep them happy and entertained without hammering our wallets.

London

Home of the Queen, Big Ben, Tower Bridge and 10 Downing Street – the iconic capital is so etched in the minds of youngsters that all they’ll need is a glimpse to fire up their imaginations.

While Buckingham Palace and the rest are free to look at, most of them have entry fees, but thankfully the big smoke is also bursting with free family days out. We’ve popped a couple of our top picks below, but you can read about some more here.

Our top picks include:

Sometimes all curious children need is to see a funny looking bird being fed some fish. And at one of the most stunning green spaces in the city – St James’ Park – they can find just that, with Pelicans in the park

The pelicans have been a fixture in the park since the 17th century. See them being fed at 2:30pm and 3:00pm every day.

The largest museum of its kind in the world – the V&A Museum of Childhood is a wonderful attraction in which young minds can lose themselves, and there is also plenty of nostalgia for parents.

Dundee

You don’t have to spend a fortune to discover Dundee. Our family-friendly hotel – Apex City Quay Hotel and Spa – is right in the centre of it all. Our explore Dundee guide also offers a local’s guide of places to visit.

And a trip to Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum, the McManus Galleries, is a must.

The attraction offers a wonderful and fascinating insight into the city on the banks of the silvery Tay, with a special calendar of workshops and exhibitions for kids.

Bath

With a host of historical, cultural and family days out, and (in our opinion) one of the best family hotels in the country, this wonderful city has everything you need to help your little ones make a splash.

With its Roman heritage, Bath is one of the most architecturally stunning cities in the UK, but this isn’t always appreciated by young children. What they will love is running around in the great outdoors as you take in the views. Pack your wellies (just in case!) and head to the National Trust’s Bath Skyline. This outdoor space has over six miles of footpaths and the fantastic ’50 things’ challenge.

Edinburgh

Scotland’s capital city is bursting with history and family fun day ideas. With a castle on your doorstep the family-friendly Apex Grassmarket Hotel is the ideal base from which to let your little ones’ imaginations run wild on a stunning Scottish city break.

As one of the Top 10 UK visitor attractions The National Museum of Scotland is one the most popular museums and galleries in the world.

Housing a stunning collection of over 20,000 artefacts – covering nature, world culture and science and discovery – the museum is unrivalled as a free family-friendly attraction.
