Things to do at Christmas time in London

When it comes to Christmas, the Big Smoke knows how to do things properly. From incredible window displays, to skating on ice (with Mickey, Minnie and the rest of the crew) there’s no end to the amount of festive fun you can pack in before, or after, a work’s Christmas soiree. Read on for some festive inspo, and find out how to turn your office jaunt into a full day and night of festive fun…

Skating at Somerset House

Dubbed as ‘London’s most glamorous skating venue’, there is no better way to get into the Christmas feel of things than to go skating at Somerset House. From mid-November through to January, you can skate to your heart’s content, enjoy warm drinks in a pop-up Alpine Lodge and even stay on into the evening for DJ sets and music events.

Christmas Panto

Sometimes you can’t beat an old classic. London has plenty of Pantomimes on over the festive period, with everything from Aladdin to Mother Goose. Find out more about them – it’s over here!

Hogwarts in the Snow

If you’ve still not managed to get tickets to the Harry Potter screenplay, don’t despair! You can immerse yourself once more in the magical world of witchcraft and wizardry by going on a studio tour. Hogwarts in the Snow returns this year at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London. Discover the magic behind the Great Hall and how Harry’s world came into its own at Christmas time.

Christmas Lights and Window Displays

Not all of London’s light spectaculars are outdoors. It’s worth heading along to Selfridges who are famed for their festive window displays, meanwhile the decorations at Fortnum and Mason are always completely mesmerising. There isn’t a festive treat you can’t find in the food hall at Harrods, with many of the deli counters offering tasters of Christmas canapes and mulled wine. And if you end up doing a bit of shopping whilst you’re there, who are we to judge?

Santa’s Grotto in Leicester Square

We imagine most kids have already started writing their lists, so make sure you factor in a trip to Santa’s Grotto. Over the festive period, Leicester Square is transformed, complete with a traditional market, a Speigletent, with a fabulous programme of festive shows.

100 years of Magic

Add a little tinsel to those Micky ears as Disney celebrates 100 Years of Magic! Over 50 of your favourite Disney characters take to the ice, including the Mouse-ter of Ceremonies Mickey Mouse, the spirited Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and many of the Disney Princesses including Jasmine, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Ariel, Snow White and Tiana.  A century of magic, all started by a mouse – book tickets now!
