Winter in Glasgow: An insider’s guide

There’s a real sense of magic in the air when Glasgow commences its Christmas countdown – the city becomes a true winter wonderland where all are welcome.

So why not unwrap its many delights with some sensational winter city breaks or unforgettable nights out with its festive party people?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and we at Apex City of Glasgow Hotel just love to give a warm welcome to you. We’re only too happy to tell you all about the exciting things happening across the city at this time of year – from special shopping experiences and fantastically festive fairs, to the best places to go for a warming winter meal or cosy canapé with added fizz.

Party night paradise

As spoilt-for-choice Glaswegians, we know all too well, the city is also Christmas party night central with a wide range of entertainment to be had, from pubs, clubs, and merry music venues that jingle all the way, to traditional pantomime productions for all the family with a uniquely Scottish twist.

Guests often ask the best place to start when looking to make the most of the festive fun – and we always say the same thing. George Square is where the city’s season of goodwill traditionally begins with the spectacular fireworks of the Glasgow Christmas lights switch-on. It continues to be at the heart of the winter celebrations with its giant tree, funfair rides, iconic big wheel, festive market and sparkling decorations, making for an eye-popping display.

Cacophony of enticing tastes and smells

The George Square market is a particularly popular annual attraction that’s open from 25 November – 29 December and operates daily from 10am until 10pm. There are festive gifts a-plenty to be had, mouth-watering street food that makes for a cacophony of enticing tastes and smells, while a Lapland-style bar offers up a wonderful and plentiful selection of hot and cold beverages for all to enjoy.

Similarly, nearby St Enoch Square offers a market with loads of gastronomic treats and festive cheer that’s just off the main shopping thoroughfare of Argyle Street.

Shopping heaven

Talking of retail therapy, the square is part of what Glaswegians call ‘the Style Mile’ – a shopping heaven which boasts over 1,500 retailers, so picking up the ideal Christmas gift or party outfit should not be a problem. If you can’t find what you’re looking for across the shopping meccas of House of Fraser, John Lewis, Buchanan Galleries, Princes Square, Argyll Arcade, and more, then you’re just not looking hard enough! There really is something for everyone here, boosted further by extended shopping hours and click and collect options that take the hassle out of the Christmas rush.

On 26 November, the Style Mile Christmas Carnival will provide an exciting music and dance spectacle across the city centre with a procession of magical characters to entertain shoppers.

Effortlessly festive

Just off Buchanan Street is the effortlessly festive Royal Exchange Square. Its fairy-lit awning covers the whole of the square year-round, but it takes on an entirely different meaning during the festive season. Similarly, Ashton Lane in the west end is a charming, beautifully lit and cobbled oasis away from the Christmas shopping bustle where you can revive and enjoy a mulled wine or two at its many bars and restaurants. It’s also known for its delightful Christmas markets.

Glasgow at Christmas simply wouldn’t be the same without a panto visit – and this year offers a strong line-up, from Gary: Tank Commander’s Greg McHugh in the SEC Armadillo’s Jack and the Beanstalk, Elaine C Smith in the King’s Theatre’s Sleeping Beauty, and Dean Park in The Wizard of Never Woz at the Pavilion Theatre. All are sure to be great fun for big and little kids alike. Oh yes they are!

Never gets old ✨

Perfectly tailored to you

For the big kids, there are the city’s exceptional party nights and dining options. Apex City of Glasgow Hotel is perfectly placed for your festive night out. It offers great dining – with a fabulous festive menu available throughout December – and a great city centre location in the heart of busy Bath Street with its many great nightspots.

Elsewhere, the multi-faceted Corinthian Club in the Merchant City area remains a Glasgow party night favourite, including private rooms, karaoke room, casino and club all under one roof, while great party packages seal the deal.

A popular west end spot meanwhile is the quirky Hillhead Bookclub with its ping pong tables, retro computer games, glowing stag heads and, most importantly, great food.

Just around the corner is the beautiful Oran Mor. Its converted church auditorium is ideal for party nights with its stunning setting, exceptional three-course dinners, and top live music to complement a buzzing dancefloor.

And once the party fun is over, Apex City of Glasgow Hotel offers a wonderfully comfy stay where you can kick off your dancing shoes or put down your shopping bags and relax in style with a great night’s sleep – at least until the next celebration.
